Ear wax is completely normal. It keeps the ear canal clean and protected, and it usually works its way out by itself. Sometimes, however, it builds up and causes muffled hearing, a blocked feeling or discomfort. Ear microsuction in Ipswich at our doctor-led clinic is a quick, gentle way to remove it, and it is one of our GP services.
Dr Skin Central is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health care in England.
What is ear microsuction?
Microsuction is a method of ear wax removal that uses a miniature suction device while the ear canal is viewed through a microscope. Because the clinician can see clearly, they can remove the wax carefully and check the ear canal and eardrum at the same time.
It is a dry technique, so no water is flushed into the ear. For this reason, many people find it more comfortable than older irrigation methods.
What can ear microsuction in Ipswich help with?
Microsuction can help when ear wax build-up is causing:
- Muffled or reduced hearing
- A blocked or full feeling in the ear
- Discomfort or ear pain
- Ringing or buzzing (tinnitus) that may be related to wax
- Problems with hearing aids or earbuds sitting properly
It is also useful if you need wax removed before a hearing test. The NHS page on earwax build-up explains common symptoms and self-care.
Not every ear problem is caused by wax, though. We look at the whole ear canal, so if we see signs of something else, such as an infection, we will explain the next steps. Where needed, we can arrange a private GP appointment.
How does it work?
The clinician looks into your ear through a microscope, which gives a magnified, well-lit view. Next, a fine suction tip lifts and removes the wax. Occasionally, small instruments help ease out harder pieces. Because everything happens under direct vision, the clinician can avoid the delicate skin of the canal as much as possible.
Your ear microsuction appointment in Ipswich
First, we ask about your symptoms and how long they have lasted. We also ask about any previous ear problems, ear surgery, perforated eardrum or infections. Then we look in your ears to check the procedure is suitable.
During the procedure, you sit comfortably. You will hear a loud sucking or whooshing noise, which is normal, and you may feel cold air or gentle tickling. Some people feel briefly light-headed or dizzy, so you can ask us to pause at any time.
The procedure usually takes around 10 to 20 minutes. However, the appointment may be a little longer to allow for your history and a final check.
Microsuction often works best when wax is softer. For that reason, we may suggest olive oil drops for a few days beforehand, and we will tell you when you book.
Downtime and aftercare
Most people go straight back to their normal day. Sounds may seem louder for a while, simply because the ear is no longer blocked.
Afterwards:
- Avoid putting anything in your ear, including cotton buds, which can push wax further in
- Let your ears settle for a day or so before swimming, if advised
- Contact us or your GP if you notice pain, discharge, bleeding or worsening hearing
Rarely, people may have temporary dizziness, mild soreness, a small scratch to the ear canal, or a short-lived increase in ringing because of the noise. Very rarely, the eardrum can be damaged. We explain this before we start.
If you have sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, do not wait for a wax appointment. Seek urgent medical advice the same day, for example through NHS 111.
How often will I need it?
For many people, one visit for ear microsuction in Ipswich is enough. However, some people naturally produce more wax or have narrow ear canals, so wax may build up again over time. If that is you, we can talk about how often to have your ears checked and how to care for them in between.
Is ear microsuction right for me?
Ear microsuction at our clinic is for adults (18 and over) only. We do not treat children. For adults, we may need to take extra care, or suggest a different approach, if you:
- Have a perforated eardrum, now or in the past
- Have had ear surgery
- Have an active ear infection, pain or discharge
- Are prone to dizziness or vertigo
Please let us know about any of these when you book.

Frequently asked questions
Does microsuction hurt?
Most people find it comfortable. It is noisy, and some people feel tickling or brief dizziness. Tell us if anything feels uncomfortable and we will pause.
Should I use cotton buds to clean my ears?
It is best not to. Cotton buds can push wax deeper and may irritate the ear canal.
Can I have microsuction if I wear hearing aids?
Yes. Hearing aid wearers often build up more wax, and microsuction can help the aids fit and work properly.
Do I need to use drops beforehand?
Not always, but softening the wax can make removal easier. We will advise when you book.
What else can I book at the clinic?
Alongside GP services, we offer treatments such as mole and skin tag removal.
Do you treat children?
No. Ear microsuction at our clinic is for adults aged 18 and over.
