Acne scars, fine lines and rough texture can make skin look tired, even when you feel well. Stretch marks can also knock your confidence. Our pico laser is best known as a pigmentation treatment, and its second main use is improving scarring and texture. This guide explains how pico laser for acne scars works at our Ipswich clinic.

How does pico laser treat acne scars?

“Pico” stands for picosecond, one trillionth of a second. Our pico laser delivers energy in these extremely short pulses, and it has three wavelengths, 532nm, 785nm and 1064nm. It can also use slightly longer nanosecond pulses when that suits the skin better.

For rejuvenation, we often use a fractional approach. This means the laser treats a grid of tiny points in the skin, leaving healthy skin in between. That untouched skin helps the treated areas heal more quickly.

What can laser skin rejuvenation help with?

Our pico laser can help improve the look of:

  • Acne scarring, including shallow pitted scars
  • Active acne, as part of a wider plan
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Rough or uneven texture and enlarged-looking pores
  • Stretch marks
  • Dull, tired-looking skin

Results vary, and deep or long-standing scars usually improve rather than disappear. We will be honest about what is realistic for your skin. To find out, book a free consultation with Dr Chi.

How does it work?

The laser delivers controlled energy into the skin. This triggers the skin’s natural repair response, which includes making new collagen and elastin. Over time, this fresh collagen can help soften scars and lines and smooth texture.

Because collagen builds slowly, results develop gradually. New collagen typically continues to form over 4 to 8 weeks after each session, so many people keep seeing improvement well after treatment.

Our pico laser is suitable for skin types I to VI. Its 785nm wavelength is designed for skin types III to VI, which lowers the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation on deeper skin tones.

Pico laser acne scar treatment

Acne scars form when deep inflammation damages collagen. Laser acne scar treatment aims to remodel that collagen, so scars look softer and shallower over a course. If you still have breakouts, we can also use our pico laser for active acne. The NHS has useful general information on acne and when to see a GP.

For some scars, combining treatments works well. For example, microneedling in Ipswich is another collagen-stimulating option we may suggest alongside laser.

Stretch marks

Stretch marks are common after growth spurts, pregnancy or weight changes. Newer red or purple marks often respond better than older, silvery-white ones. Treatment can help them look less noticeable, but it will not remove them completely. The NHS explains more about stretch marks.

Your laser skin rejuvenation appointment in Ipswich

Free consultation with Dr Chi. First, we look at your skin and ask about your medical history, medicines and goals. After that, we agree a personalised plan.

Patch test. We carry out a patch test before your first full treatment.

Treatment. You wear protective eyewear while the practitioner treats the area in passes. Most people feel mild warmth or tingling, and most treatments do not need numbing cream. Sessions take 20 to 45 minutes.

Downtime and aftercare

Downtime is usually minimal. Your skin may look slightly red or feel warm, which typically fades within hours. Some people notice a slightly rough texture for a few days as the skin renews. Less commonly, the skin can become temporarily darker or lighter, and blistering or scarring is rare. We discuss these risks at your consultation.

For 24 to 48 hours, avoid direct sun and active skincare such as exfoliating acids and vitamin A products. In addition, keep your skin clean and well moisturised. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF50 every day, because sun protection helps protect your results.

How many sessions, and when will I see results?

Most rejuvenation courses involve 3 to 6 sessions, spaced to let the skin repair in between. Many people notice improved tone and texture after the first session. However, the bigger changes to scars, lines and stretch marks build over the course and the weeks after it.

Your practitioner will review your progress at each visit. If needed, we adjust the plan or suggest maintenance sessions.

Is it right for me?

We would usually advise waiting if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an infection, cold sore or broken skin in the area
  • Have a recent tan or fake tan
  • Take medicines that make your skin more sensitive to light
  • Have taken certain prescription acne tablets in the last six months
  • Tend to form raised or thickened scars
