Polynucleotides are one of the most talked-about skin treatments of recent years. Rather than adding volume, they work with your skin’s own repair processes. We offer polynucleotides in Ipswich at our doctor-led clinic, as face skin boosters and as a dedicated eye treatment. They can suit adults over 18 who want healthier, fresher-looking skin with a natural result.

What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are a bio-stimulating treatment made from purified DNA fragments. They are commonly derived from fish DNA, which is highly purified for medical use. Once injected, they act as a signal that encourages your skin cells to work more effectively.

They are often grouped with skin boosters. However, they work differently from hyaluronic acid treatments such as Profhilo. Rather than mainly hydrating, they focus on regeneration.

What can polynucleotides help with?

Polynucleotides may help with:

  • Fine lines and crepey texture, especially on the face and around the eyes
  • Thin or fragile-looking skin
  • Dull or tired-looking skin that has lost its glow
  • Under-eye concerns, such as crepiness and a hollow or shadowed look
  • Uneven tone, because they can help rebalance pigment-cell activity

Polynucleotides for the eye area

The eye area is a common place for this treatment. The skin here is very thin, so it often shows tiredness first. In addition, options for this delicate area are more limited than elsewhere on the face.

How do they work?

Polynucleotides stimulate tissue regeneration and fibroblasts, the cells that make collagen and elastin. In simple terms, they help your skin repair and renew itself. Over time, this can:

  • Boost collagen production
  • Improve elasticity and hydration
  • Calm inflammation in the skin
  • Help even out skin tone

Polynucleotides generally have a good safety and tolerability profile. That is one reason they are often chosen for delicate areas. However, side effects are still possible with any injectable, and we explain them at your consultation.

Your polynucleotides appointment in Ipswich

Consultation first

We start by understanding your concerns, medical history and any medicines you take. Then we check that polynucleotides suit you and agree a personalised plan. If another treatment would suit you better, we will say so.

The treatment

First, we cleanse your skin. Then we place the product with small injections or a fine cannula, depending on the area. Around the eyes, we place it very carefully beneath the delicate skin.

How long it takes and how it feels

Treatment usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Most people feel a brief stinging or pinching sensation. Numbing cream may help with comfort, and we check in with you throughout.

Downtime and aftercare

Most people return to normal activities the same day. Small bumps at the injection sites are common and usually settle within a day or so. Some redness, swelling or bruising can occur, particularly around the eyes. This typically fades within a few days.

For the first 24 hours or so, we usually advise you to:

  • Avoid make-up on the treated area for several hours
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and alcohol
  • Avoid rubbing or pressing the area
  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF daily, such as Obagi Sun Shield SPF50

How many sessions, and when will I see results?

At our Ipswich clinic, polynucleotides are usually given as a course. Many people have around three sessions, spaced a few weeks apart. After that, maintenance treatments are often suggested to help keep the benefits.

Because they support your skin’s own repair, results build gradually. Many people notice better skin quality over the weeks after their course. Results vary from person to person.

Is it right for me?

Polynucleotides can suit many adults who want better skin quality. However, they may not be suitable, or you may need to wait, if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a fish or seafood allergy
  • Have an active skin infection, cold sore or inflammation in the area
  • Have certain medical conditions, including some autoimmune conditions
  • Have a bleeding disorder, or take certain medicines, including blood thinners

Please share your full medical history so we can advise you safely. If you are choosing a practitioner, the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners has useful guidance for the public.

Frequently asked questions

How are polynucleotides different from Profhilo?

Both aim to improve skin quality. Profhilo is a hyaluronic acid treatment that hydrates and stimulates the skin. Polynucleotides use DNA fragments to support regeneration. Our guide to choosing the right skin booster explains the differences.

Can polynucleotides help dark circles?

They may improve the look of thin, crepey skin under the eyes. As a result, shadows can look less noticeable. However, dark circles have several causes, so we assess yours first.

Will I look different?

Polynucleotides do not add volume or change your features. The aim is healthier, fresher-looking skin.

Can I have them with other treatments?

Often, yes. For example, some people combine them with Sunekos skin boosters or Profhilo. We will advise on timing.
