Microneedling uses very fine needles to make tiny, controlled channels in the skin. This prompts your skin to start its own natural repair process. For microneedling in Ipswich, our doctor-led clinic uses SkinPen. It is most often chosen by people who want to soften acne scarring on the face or improve fine lines on the neck.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy. It is carried out with a handheld device fitted with a sterile cartridge of very fine needles. As the device glides over the skin, it creates thousands of tiny micro-injuries. They are too small to see once they settle, but your skin notices them and responds.
For all microneedling at our Ipswich clinic, we use SkinPen, a professional-only device. The manufacturer describes it as the first FDA-cleared microneedling device, and you can read more on the official SkinPen website. It uses no heat and no chemicals. Instead, the effect comes entirely from your skin’s own healing response.
What can microneedling help with?
Microneedling can help with:
- Acne scarring on the face, particularly rolling and shallow scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles on the neck, where skin can look thin and crepey
- Uneven texture, such as enlarged-looking pores or a rough surface
- Dull, tired-looking skin that has lost some of its bounce
However, it is not a quick fix for deep, pitted scars or significant skin laxity. Results vary from person to person. For marks and pigmentation rather than scarring, our pico laser for pigmentation may be a better fit.

How does it work?
The tiny channels trigger the same three stages your skin goes through whenever it heals:
- Inflammation. In the first few days, your skin sends repair signals to the treated area. This is why it looks pink afterwards.
- Proliferation. Over the following weeks, new tissue begins to form. In addition, the skin starts producing fresh collagen and elastin.
- Remodelling. Over the following months, the new collagen matures and reorganises. This is when skin can start to feel firmer and look smoother.
So microneedling results build gradually rather than appearing overnight.
Your microneedling appointment in Ipswich
Consultation first
Before any treatment, we talk through your medical history, any medicines you take and your skin concerns. We check that microneedling is suitable for you. After that, we agree a personalised plan, which may combine it with other treatments or skincare.
The treatment itself
First, your skin is cleansed and a numbing cream is usually applied. Next, a gliding serum is spread over the area. The practitioner then passes the SkinPen across the skin in sections.
Most people describe a vibrating, prickly or scratchy sensation. The treatment itself takes as little as 30 minutes, plus time for the numbing cream to work.
Downtime and aftercare
Your skin will usually look pink or red, rather like mild sunburn. It may also feel warm and tight for a day or two. After that, some people notice slight dryness or flaking for a few days. Less commonly, there may be pinpoint bruising, a breakout, temporary darkening of the skin or, rarely, infection. Contact us if anything concerns you.
To help your skin recover:
- Keep your skin clean and avoid touching it for the rest of the day.
- Avoid make-up for at least 24 hours, or as your practitioner advises.
- Skip strong actives, such as exfoliating acids and vitamin A products, for a few days.
- Avoid saunas, swimming and hard exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
- Protect your skin from the sun with a broad-spectrum SPF every day. See our aftercare picks at the end of this guide.
How many sessions, and when will I see results?
Many people notice their skin looks fresher within a week or two. However, changes to scarring and lines take longer, because new collagen develops over several months.
For most people having microneedling at our Ipswich clinic, a course is recommended. This is typically three or more sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Some people also add Dermalux LED light therapy or a course of chemical peels to support their results.
Is microneedling right for me?
Microneedling suits many skin types, but it is not right for everyone. You may need to wait, or choose a different treatment, if you:
- have active acne breakouts, a cold sore or a skin infection in the area
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- have taken prescription acne tablets in the past six months
- tend to form raised or keloid scars
- have active eczema, psoriasis or rosacea in the treatment area
- take blood-thinning medicines, or have a bleeding disorder
- have a sun tan or sunburn
This is not a complete list, which is why the consultation matters. Please tell us about any medicines or health conditions, even if they seem unrelated.

Frequently asked questions
Does microneedling hurt?
Most people find it very manageable with numbing cream. You will feel the device moving over your skin, and some areas are more sensitive than others.
Can I go back to work the next day?
Many people do, although your skin may still look a little pink. If you have an important event, leave at least a week between treatment and the day itself.
Is it different from a home derma roller?
Yes. SkinPen is a professional-only device with sterile, single-use cartridges and controlled needle depth. Home tools cannot offer the same control.
Can it be combined with other treatments?
Often, yes. For example, we may suggest it alongside peels, LED or a tailored skincare routine. We will plan the timing with you.
