Lip filler is a popular treatment, and one of the most personal. Some people want a little more volume, while others want better shape or symmetry. Some simply want to restore lips that have thinned with age.

With lip filler in Ipswich, at our doctor-led clinic, we aim for lips that suit your face and still look like your own. Treatment is for adults aged 18 and over and always starts with a consultation.

What is lip filler?

Lip filler is a soft gel made from hyaluronic acid. This substance occurs naturally in the skin, where it attracts and holds water.

Lip fillers are soft and flexible, so they move naturally when you talk and smile. We offer premium lip filler and Juvéderm ULTRA SMILE. Your practitioner will recommend the right product and amount for you. In addition, hyaluronic acid filler is broken down by the body over time, and it can be dissolved if needed.

What can lip filler in Ipswich help with?

Lip filler can help with:

  • Volume – adding fullness to thin lips
  • Shape – a clearer lip border or a more defined cupid’s bow
  • Balance – better proportion between the upper and lower lip
  • Symmetry – softening small differences between sides
  • Hydration – many people notice smoother, less dry-looking lips
  • Fine lip lines – softening vertical lines on the lips

There is no single “look”. A good result depends on your natural lip shape, your face and what feels right for you. Lips are just one of the areas we treat with dermal fillers, and you can see the full range on our injectables page.

How does it work?

Your practitioner places filler in small amounts into specific parts of the lip. They use a very fine needle or, sometimes, a blunt-tipped cannula. They build shape and volume gradually and check symmetry as they go. Most lip fillers also contain a local anaesthetic, which makes treatment more comfortable.

Your lip filler appointment

The consultation

Your first step for lip filler in Ipswich is a consultation (£30). We take your medical history and look at your lips in relation to your whole face. Then we talk through what you would like.

A photo of a look you like can help, but we will be honest about what suits you. We also explain the possible side effects and how to spot a problem.

The treatment

We cleanse the area and usually apply numbing cream first. The lips are sensitive, so you may feel some stinging and pressure. However, most people find it manageable. The injections take around 15 to 20 minutes, and the whole visit usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes.

Your review

We usually see you again after about two weeks. By then swelling has gone down, so we can check the result.

Lip filler swelling and aftercare

Your lips will look fuller straight away, but much of this early fullness is swelling. Swelling is usually most noticeable for the first day or two. It then settles over a few days, although lips can take up to two weeks to fully soften. Bruising, tenderness and small lumps are also common while the filler settles.

Our usual aftercare advice:

  • Avoid touching, pressing or kissing for the rest of the day
  • Avoid lipstick and lip products for 12 to 24 hours
  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and steam rooms for 24 to 48 hours
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours to reduce bruising
  • Avoid straws for the first day
  • Avoid dental treatment for around two weeks

Serious complications are rare, but they can happen with any filler. The most important is filler blocking a blood vessel, which needs urgent treatment. Contact us straight away if you notice increasing pain, or pale, dusky or blotchy skin on or around the lips. We explain what to watch for at your appointment. For independent advice on choosing a practitioner, see the NHS guide to cosmetic procedures and the Save Face register.

How many sessions, and when will I see results?

You will see a difference straight away, with the settled result at around two weeks. If you are new to lip filler, starting with a smaller amount is often wise. You can always add more later.

Lip filler is not permanent. Because the lips move so much, results typically last around six months to a year. This depends on the product and your body.

Is it right for me?

We will usually advise you to wait, or suggest an alternative, if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a cold sore or infection around the lips (tell us if you are prone to cold sores)
  • Have certain autoimmune conditions, or an allergy to filler ingredients or local anaesthetic
  • Have a bleeding disorder, or take blood-thinning medicines (tell us, but never stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice)
  • Have a special event in the next two weeks

If you would like a subtle change to the upper lip without added volume, ask about the lip flip, part of our anti-wrinkle treatment range.

Frequently asked questions

Will my lips look natural?

That is our aim. We work in small amounts and plan around your face. We will also tell you honestly if more filler would not improve your result.

Should I have 0.5ml or 1ml?

It depends on your starting point and your goals. Many first-timers start with around 0.5ml, and we will recommend an amount at your consultation.

How long does swelling last?

Most swelling settles within a few days. However, allow up to two weeks for the final result, especially before an event.

What if I do not like the result?

Hyaluronic acid filler can usually be dissolved. Our guide to filler dissolving explains how it works.
