Not every filler result turns out as planned. Lips may feel overfilled, or filler may have moved beyond where it was placed. Sometimes you simply want to start again with a more natural look.

Filler dissolving in Ipswich, at our doctor-led clinic, can help break down hyaluronic acid filler so the area can return towards its natural state. Treatment is for adults aged 18 and over and always begins with a careful consultation.

What is filler dissolving treatment?

Filler dissolving treatment uses an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. This is the main ingredient in most modern dermal fillers. We inject it where the unwanted filler sits, and it helps the body clear the filler away.

It is a medical treatment that needs a proper assessment. It also only works on hyaluronic acid fillers. So it helps to know, where possible, which product you had.

What can filler dissolving in Ipswich help with?

People come to us for many reasons, including:

  • Overfilled lips or a result that feels too large for the face
  • Migration – filler that has spread beyond the treated area, such as a “shelf” above the upper lip
  • Lumps or unevenness that have not settled with time
  • Tear trough concerns such as puffiness or a bluish tinge under the eyes
  • Asymmetry from previous treatment
  • A fresh start – clearing old filler before a new, more balanced plan
  • Changing your mind – simply preferring your natural features

In rare cases, dissolving may also be used urgently to manage a filler complication. Your practitioner will explain this at your consultation. You can find out more about our injectable treatments on our injectables page.

How does it work?

The enzyme breaks the bonds that hold the hyaluronic acid gel together. As a result, your body can clear it naturally. Many people notice a difference within a day or two.

The enzyme can also act on some of the hyaluronic acid naturally present in your skin. However, the body replenishes this over time.

Your filler dissolving appointment

The consultation

Your first appointment for filler dissolving in Ipswich is a consultation (£30). We ask about your previous treatment, including when it was done, which areas and which product. We take a full medical history, including allergies, and examine the area carefully.

Some people are allergic to the enzyme, so we may recommend a patch test first. After that, we explain whether dissolving is suitable and what result is realistic.

The treatment

We cleanse the skin and inject small amounts of the dissolving solution with a fine needle. You may feel a stinging or burning sensation that usually passes quickly. The treatment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of areas.

Your review

We will see you again to check how the area has responded. Then we can decide together whether further treatment is needed.

Downtime and aftercare

Swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising are common for a few days. As the filler breaks down, the area may look a little deflated or uneven at first. In most cases this improves as swelling settles over the next week or two.

Our usual aftercare advice:

  • Avoid touching or rubbing the area for the rest of the day, unless advised otherwise
  • Avoid make-up on the area for 12 to 24 hours
  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and steam rooms for 24 to 48 hours
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
  • Contact us straight away if you notice increasing swelling, itching or a rash

If you have any difficulty breathing, seek urgent medical help immediately.

How many sessions, and when will I see results?

Many people see a clear change within 24 to 48 hours. The area then continues to settle over the next couple of weeks.

One session is often enough. However, larger amounts of filler, older filler or certain products may need more than one session. These are usually spaced a couple of weeks apart. Results vary with the amount and type of filler.

If you plan to have filler again, we usually recommend waiting at least two weeks. That gives the area time to settle, so we can assess it properly. For some people, skin quality treatments such as Profhilo are a good next step instead.

Is it right for me?

Filler dissolving may not be suitable, or we may advise waiting, if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a known allergy to the enzyme, or to bee or wasp stings (please tell us)
  • Have an infection, cold sore or skin problem in the area
  • Had a filler that is not hyaluronic acid based, because dissolving will not work on it
  • Take certain medicines that may affect treatment

Choosing a qualified practitioner matters, both for filler and for correcting it. The Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners offers independent safety advice for the public.

Frequently asked questions

Can you dissolve filler I had done elsewhere?

Yes, we regularly see people who had filler at other clinics. It helps to know which product was used, but we can still assess you if you do not.

Will it dissolve all my filler?

The aim is to break down the unwanted filler. Sometimes a second session is needed, and your practitioner will discuss what is realistic.

Can I have new filler straight after?

We usually recommend waiting at least two weeks. If you then want to refresh your lips, our lip filler guide explains our approach.

Does it hurt?

There is usually a short stinging or burning sensation. Most people find it very manageable.
