Fat freezing, also known as cryolipolysis, is a non-surgical way to target small areas of stubborn fat. Fat freezing in Ipswich is commonly used on areas such as the tummy, flanks and inner thighs. It suits adults near a stable, healthy weight who want to refine a specific area rather than lose weight overall.

What is fat freezing?

Fat freezing is a non-invasive fat reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to target fat cells under the skin. There are no needles, incisions or anaesthetic. Instead, an applicator is placed on the area and cools the fat layer in a carefully controlled way.

As with all our body treatments, it is not a weight-loss treatment. It is designed to change the shape of a particular area, so it works best when your weight is steady.

What can fat freezing in Ipswich help with?

Fat freezing can help reduce the look of stubborn fat in areas such as:

  • The abdomen and lower tummy
  • The flanks (“love handles”)
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • The back and bra-line area
  • Upper arms
  • Under the chin, depending on your anatomy

It is best for fat you can gently pinch. However, it does not treat deeper fat around the organs or loose skin. If laxity is your main concern, body contouring with radiofrequency may suit you better. You can compare options on our body treatments page.

How does cryolipolysis work?

Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the surrounding skin. Cryolipolysis takes advantage of this by cooling the fat layer to a temperature that damages fat cells. At the same time, it aims to leave the skin above unharmed.

Over the following weeks, the affected cells break down naturally. The body then clears them through its normal processes. This is why changes are gradual rather than immediate.

Your fat freezing appointment in Ipswich

We start with a consultation. We take your medical history, understand what you would like to change and check you are suitable. After that, we agree a personalised plan, including which areas to treat.

During treatment, a protective gel pad goes on the skin and the applicator is positioned over it. Many applicators use gentle suction to draw the tissue in. For the first few minutes you will feel firm pulling and intense cold, which usually settles as the area goes numb. Many people read or simply relax.

When the applicator comes off, your practitioner usually massages the area briefly. It can feel tender or tingly as it warms up. Each applicator cycle typically takes 35 to 60 minutes, so several areas mean a longer visit.

Downtime and aftercare

Most people return to normal activities straight away. It is common for the treated area to:

  • Look red for a few hours
  • Feel numb, tingly or tender for a few days to a few weeks
  • Show mild swelling or bruising, especially where suction was used

These effects usually settle by themselves. Rarely, a cold injury to the skin can occur. Also rarely, the treated area becomes firmer and larger rather than smaller, a condition called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, which does not go away on its own and may need further treatment. We explain this and all other possible effects at your consultation.

To support your results, keep up gentle exercise and drink plenty of water. In addition, aim to keep your weight stable. The NHS has practical advice on maintaining a healthy weight.

How many sessions, and when will I see results?

With fat freezing in Ipswich, some people are happy after one session on an area. Others choose a second session to build on the change. Your practitioner will advise on the right plan for you.

Because the body clears treated fat cells gradually, changes are not instant. Many people notice a difference after around four weeks. The fuller result is typically seen at about two to three months, although results vary.

Is fat freezing right for me?

Fat freezing is for adults over 18. It may not be suitable, or you may need to wait, if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a cold-triggered condition, such as cold urticaria, cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria
  • Have Raynaud’s or poor circulation in the area
  • Have a hernia in or near the treatment area
  • Have recent surgery, scars, broken skin or an active skin infection in the area
  • Have reduced sensation in the area

This list is not complete, so please tell us about any medical conditions and medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Does fat freezing hurt?

The first few minutes feel very cold and you will notice the pulling. After that, most people find it settles as the area goes numb. The area can feel tender afterwards.

Is fat freezing the same as fat dissolving injections?

No. Fat freezing uses cold and no needles, whereas fat dissolving is injectable. Our guide to Aqualyx fat dissolving explains the difference.

Can I treat more than one area in a day?

Often, yes. We will plan this with you based on your goals and comfort.

Will the fat come back?

The body clears treated fat cells. However, remaining fat cells can still grow if you gain weight, so a stable weight helps you keep your results.
