Dermalux LED light therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment for tired, stressed or lacklustre skin. It uses specific wavelengths of light to support the skin’s natural repair processes. There are no needles, no peeling and no recovery time. At our Ipswich clinic, it also works well as an add-on to other treatments.

What is Dermalux LED light therapy?

LED stands for light-emitting diode. During a Dermalux treatment, you lie comfortably under a flexible canopy of LED panels. These bathe the skin in light at carefully chosen wavelengths, an approach often called phototherapy. You can learn more about the technology on the official Dermalux website.

Unlike lasers, LED light does not heat or damage the skin to create a result. Instead, skin cells absorb the light energy, which is thought to help them work more efficiently. The session is calm and quiet, so many people find it genuinely relaxing.

What can LED light therapy help with?

Dermalux LED can help with:

  • Tired, dull-looking skin that needs a lift
  • Uneven texture and a lack of radiance
  • Redness and sensitivity, as part of a wider plan
  • Breakout-prone skin, alongside the right skincare
  • Recovery after other treatments, where your practitioner feels it is suitable

It is a supportive treatment rather than a dramatic one. So it works best as part of a consistent routine.

How does Dermalux LED light therapy work?

Different colours of light reach different depths of the skin:

  • Blue light acts near the surface and is commonly used for breakout-prone skin.
  • Red light reaches a little deeper. It is associated with supporting natural renewal and collagen production.
  • Near-infrared light reaches deepest. It is associated with calming the skin and supporting repair.

Your practitioner chooses the combination of wavelengths that suits your skin on the day. The aim is to encourage your skin’s own repair processes, rather than force a change from the outside.

What happens at your appointment

Consultation first

We start by talking about your skin, health, medicines and goals. Then we check that LED is suitable for you. If you book it as an add-on, this forms part of your main treatment consultation.

The treatment itself

First, your skin is cleansed. Next, you lie back while the LED canopy is positioned over your face, and you wear protective eyewear. Most people feel nothing more than gentle warmth. A treatment usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, including preparation.

Downtime and aftercare

There is typically no downtime. You can return to your normal day straight away, and you can usually wear make-up afterwards. Some people notice slight warmth or pinkness that fades quickly.

To make the most of your treatment:

  • Keep your skin hydrated with a moisturiser that suits you.
  • Stay consistent, because LED works best as a course.
  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF daily to protect your skin.

How many sessions, and when will I see results?

Many people notice tangible results after just one treatment. For example, skin often looks fresher, calmer and more radiant. For longer-lasting changes in tone, texture or breakouts, a course is usually recommended. This is often several sessions over a few weeks, followed by occasional top-ups. Results vary, and we will suggest a plan that suits you.

LED as an add-on to other treatments

LED pairs well with many of our skin treatments. It is a popular finishing step after a Luxury Hydrofacial. In addition, your practitioner may suggest it alongside SkinPen microneedling or a course of chemical peels, when the timing is right for your skin.

Is Dermalux LED light therapy right for me?

Dermalux LED light therapy suits most skin types and tones. However, it may not be right for you, or you may need to wait, if you:

  • take medicines that make you sensitive to light, such as some antibiotics or acne tablets
  • have a condition made worse by light, or epilepsy triggered by light
  • have an active skin infection or broken skin in the area
  • are pregnant, so we can advise you first
  • have had recent cancer treatment or have a history of skin cancer

Please mention any medicines and health conditions at your consultation, even if they seem unrelated.

Frequently asked questions

Is LED light therapy the same as a laser?

No. LED does not use heat to damage or remove skin. Instead, it uses low-level light to support the skin’s own processes, so there is typically no recovery time.

Does it feel uncomfortable?

Most people find it relaxing. You may feel gentle warmth, and the eyewear protects your eyes from the brightness.

Can I have LED if I have darker skin?

LED light therapy is generally suitable for all skin tones. Your practitioner will confirm this at your consultation.

How often can I have it?

That depends on your goals. During a course, sessions are usually close together. After that, occasional top-ups help maintain results.
