Many of us have small areas of fat that will not shift, however carefully we eat or exercise. A soft double chin, love handles or a bra bulge are common examples. Aqualyx fat dissolving injections can help reduce these stubborn pockets and improve body contour. At our doctor-led clinic in Ipswich, Aqualyx is for adults aged 18 and over, and it always starts with a consultation.

What is Aqualyx fat dissolving?

Aqualyx is an injectable solution designed to break down fat cells in targeted areas. It is a contouring treatment, not a weight-loss treatment. So it works best on small, well-defined areas of fat in people who are close to a stable, healthy weight.

It is not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise. It is also not designed to treat loose skin.

What can Aqualyx fat dissolving help with?

We use Aqualyx on areas including:

  • Chin – a soft double chin
  • Jaw – fullness along the jawline
  • Arms – the upper arms
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Love handles
  • Abdomen
  • Bra bulge – the area around the bra strap at the back and sides

At your consultation, we look at each area and tell you honestly whether Aqualyx is likely to help. For larger areas, a non-invasive option such as fat freezing or body contouring may suit you better. You can compare options on our injectables page and body treatments page.

How does it work?

We inject the solution directly into the fatty layer under the skin. It acts on the walls of fat cells, so they break down. After that, your body gradually clears the released fat through its natural processes over the following weeks.

Because the treated fat cells are broken down, results can be long-lasting if your weight stays stable. However, if you gain weight, the remaining fat cells in the area can still get bigger.

Your Aqualyx appointment

The consultation

Your first appointment is a consultation (£30). We take a full medical history, ask about any medicines you take and examine the areas you want to treat. Then we discuss realistic expectations and possible side effects. If Aqualyx is suitable, we create a personalised plan, including how many sessions you are likely to need.

The treatment

We cleanse and mark the area. Then we use a fine needle or cannula to inject the solution into the fat beneath the skin. You may feel stinging, heat or a burning sensation, which usually eases within a short time. Treatment typically takes 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas.

Your review

We see you before each session to check your progress. That way we can adjust your plan if needed.

Downtime and aftercare

Swelling is an expected part of treatment and can be quite noticeable, especially under the chin. It usually settles over several days, although it can take a week or two for some people. Redness, tenderness, bruising and a firm or lumpy feel are also common in the first week or two. Rarely, problems such as infection, skin damage or temporary nerve irritation can occur. We will explain what is normal and when to contact us.

Our usual aftercare advice:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and sunbeds for a few days
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
  • Drink plenty of water and keep active with gentle walking
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing over body areas
  • Plan around events, because swelling on the chin and jaw can be visible

How many sessions, and when will I see results?

Most people need more than one session for their best result. A course is often two to four sessions, spaced several weeks apart. However, this varies with the area and the amount of fat.

Changes are gradual. Many people notice a difference a few weeks after a session, once swelling settles and the body clears the fat. Results vary from person to person, and your practitioner will give you a realistic idea.

Is Aqualyx fat dissolving right for me?

Aqualyx suits people near a stable, healthy weight with small, stubborn areas of fat. It may not be suitable, or we may advise waiting, if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are hoping to lose weight overall
  • Have an infection or skin problem in the area
  • Have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medicines
  • Have certain medical conditions, such as poorly controlled diabetes or an autoimmune condition, or take certain medicines (we check this carefully)
  • Mainly have loose skin rather than fat in the area

If loose skin is your main concern, skin tightening may be a better fit. In addition, if you want to lose weight more generally, we offer a medical weight loss consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aqualyx a weight-loss treatment?

No. It is designed to contour small areas of stubborn fat, not to reduce overall body weight.

How soon will I see a difference?

Changes are gradual. Many people notice a difference a few weeks after a session, with the full result after a course.

Will the fat come back?

Treated fat cells are broken down, but results depend on keeping your weight stable. Weight gain can affect the area again.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel stinging or burning during and shortly after treatment, which usually settles. Experiences vary.
